Sun shining through Forest, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

A recent CBS News article, Mental Illness in US Adults Widespread, shined light on how extensive mental illness has become in the United States. Shocking statistics were presented and expressed just how prominent mental illness is and the immense amount of Americans who are dealing with it each and every day. Additionally, the article expressed that there is help for those facing mental illness but many of those affected are unaware of this.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s 2013 Survey on Drug Use and Health, one in five American adults (43.8 million people) was diagnosed with a mental illness.

More than 15 million people over the age of 18 suffered from major depression in 2013, and of those, over nine million reported thoughts of suicide with 1.3 million having attempted suicide.

These statistics are alarming as it shows the vast amount of Americans that experience mental illness and also have reached the place of attempting or completing suicide. Additionally, many of those affected by mental illness did not get the treatment they needed because they believed they could not afford it or did not know where to obtain help.
