About Suicide Prevention
Switchboard is well known in the community for our notable expertise in the field of suicide prevention and intervention. Switchboard has trained specialists who are available to provide training or presentations on suicide prevention and related subjects.
Switchboard’s Suicide Prevention Department’s services are expansive, beginning with a suicide/crisis intervention helpline in 1968 and an accredited agency and opportunity for certification as a Certified Crisis Counselor through the American Association of Suicidology and Contact USA. Switchboard has expanded its expertise and reputation to provide various levels of suicide prevention and intervention training to professionals and paraprofessionals who work with the general public. These include the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), providing two-day highly interactive, hands-on workshops for caregivers who want to increase their comfort level and competencies in addressing immediate risks of suicide. Other trainings offered focus on skill building to help engage clients in crisis like Active Listening, Motivational Interviewing and Mandatory Reporting. These trainings are also highly customizable and can cover wide range of topics from customer service to culturally diversity and more. All trainings include CEU’s for licensed Clinical Social Work, Family & Marriage Counseling and Mental Health Counseling and Psychologists.
The Suicide Prevention Department of Switchboard also handles care coordination and follow up for those identified to be at risk of suicide. Projects that Switchboard has participated in are the yearly Out of Darkness Walks to raise awareness with Suicide, the Florida Youth Suicide Prevention Grant a 3 year research Grant in collaboration with University of South Florida to reduce the rate of suicide among youth. Currently Switchboard is part of South Florida Suicide Coalition which not only raises awareness and engages community but is also foundation for a Mini-Conference on Suicide in collaboration with key stakeholders throughout the community. Suicide Prevention also provides direct services to the public that include phone services and online emotional support: Chat and Text (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Veterans Crisis Line, Disaster Distress HELPline, Disaster Distress Text line, Crisis Text Line, Lifeline Crisis Chat). Through these mediums Switchboard’s Suicide Prevention will be able to provide 24/7 crisis counseling & intervention as well as Information & referral.
The goal is to optimize the level of awareness and services out in the community for individuals, families and/and their loved ones in need of services or are in distress. Also Aims to allow individuals to continue living with their lives, improve interpersonal relationship dynamics and quality of life, and allows individuals to successfully live in the community. Will have and/or increase access to the services needed and will be empowered to continue utilizing the necessary services to overcome challenges, increase level of daily functioning.
All training below includes CEU’s for licensed Clinical Social Work, Family & Marriage Counseling and Mental Health Counseling. CE Broker Provider #50-15676, expires 3/31/2017.
Miami Dade Suicide Coalition:
Founded by various area organizations to help promote and raise community awareness on the issues of Suicide. Switchboard of Miami Inc. is proud of its partnership and collaboration working toward a Suicide Safer Miami Dade County. Aim is to create a super charged network of concerned citizens, professionals and organizations looking to end the stigma of suicide.
Suicide Assessment Skills Training:
2-4 hour training for professional that want to deepen their knowledge on suicide prevention techniques and risk assessment skills. Opportunities for this training are limited.
Created by LivingWorks, ASIST, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, is a 2-day highly interactive, practical, and practice-oriented workshop for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. The workshop will discuss methods and provide tools necessary to encourage the continuation of life – no matter what challenges are faced. Learn how you can prevent the immediate risk of suicide by joining the over one million caregivers who have participated in ASIST!
One hour talk on suicide to engage the community raising the awareness of suicide and the help out there for those at risk of suicide.
A 1-2 hours Mandatory reporting of abuse, homicide ideation and suicide ideation and steps to be taken. A review of clients rights to confidentiality.
Active listening is a 1-2 hours training on communication technique used in Rogerian counseling. Active listening requires the listener to understand, interpret, and evaluate what they hear. The ability to listen actively can improve personal relationships through reducing conflicts, strengthening cooperation, and fostering understanding/insight.
In this course, you will learn about the motivational interviewing approach to helping people change and see the crucial importance of matching interventions to individuals’ stages of change in order to improve the likelihood of success. In addition to examining the principles of MI, you will learn specific skills and techniques that will support the primary goals of MI, which include establishing rapport, eliciting change talk, and establishing commitment language.
